"The Man in the Loftier Castle' Season 1, Episode 5 Recap
'The Man in the High Castle' deals with the aftermath of the assassination while Juliana searches for answers in San Francisco.
After an explosive episode, The Man in the High Castlefocuses on the aftermath of the events at the Crown Prince'south speech as the bulk of the episode occurs in San Francisco. In one case the dust settles, the episode steps away from the action and examines the lives of our primary characters. Without hesitation, here is the officialspoiler alert for "The New Normal."
Immediately after the shots repeat, the photographic camera focuses on Frank (Rupert Evans) in a land of shock. In a blank state, Frank stares at those around him. Hither, he finally realizes that he has his gun exposed in his right mitt. He rapidly flees from the crowd merely drops Juliana's necklace on the floor. Adjacent, the photographic camera shifts to Tagomi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and the Crown Princess (Mayumi Yoshida) tending to the Crown Prince (Daisuke). Inspector Kido ( Joel de la Fuente) immeditately controls the situation as he orders his men to confiscate all cameras and other forms of media in lodge to prevent exposure of this incident. Finally, amidst all the chaos, Wegener swallows the sample small tube containing microfilm and undergoes a security check with the Japanese guards, who detain him before long after.
Dorsum to his escape, Frank dodges guard patrols and hides his gun near a sewer. Frank returns home to find an upset Ed who discusses his phone phone call with Juliana. In response, Frank exclaims that Ed cannot speak with anyone about the gun.
Upon farther examination of the premises, Tagomi finds Juliana's necklace. Once he arrives at the infirmary, he finds a distressed and unstable princess following her man into the emergency room while Tagomi stares into his hands. This shot symbolizes how Tagomi believes that he is responsible for the Crown Prince's life. As a trusted advisor, he had encouraged the princess to persuade his husband to give his voice communication simply to avert a shaky international appearance to other nations. This deep regret within Tagomi as well reflects the Japanese sense of duty and laurels to his Prince.
Entering San Francisco for the first time since the pilot, Juliana awakens to Japanese soldiers removing passengers from the charabanc. Security is very high at the moment since the Japanese are on the chase for the shooter. Juliana somewhen finds Frank at dwelling. She tries to ask Frank what is incorrect afterwards her distressing phone call with Ed, simply Frank tells her nigh the shooting of the Crown Prince. Abruptly, Frank suggests that Juliana visits her worried mother and refuses to requite Juliana a hug. This refusal shows the strained relationship as Frank can barely acknowledge Juliana'south presence throughout the conversation.
At the hospital, the surgeon informs Tagomi and the Crown Princess virtually the Crown Prince's critical condition. He invites the Princess to visit the Prince and wait with him, after sustaining significant harm to the middle.
While visiting, Juliana greets her mother. She immediately discusses the possibility of a Nazi occupation in the Pacific States. Anne (Macall Gordon) reveals that the Japanese tortured Frank. When asked about Trudy, Juliana leaves domicile. Sobbing in Frank's arms, she apologizes for her part in Frank's torture in the prison house. She asks most the services for Laura and her children every bit well as Frank's release. Frank quickly answers her questions and goes to work.
Upon his return to New York, Nazi agents kidnap Joe (Luke Kleintank) and abandon him inside an office. Eventually, Joe undergoes an interview where he details the events of his mission. With Smith in the room, Joe begins to retell a shaky story to try to hide his actions in Catechism Metropolis. Smith and then informs Joe about Lemnel'south disappearance and that Joe failed his mission completely.
In a hotel room, Tagomi meets Wegener to talk over the microfilm and his escape from Japanese patrol. Wegener reveals that he swallowed the microfilm to ensure its security. Although Tagomi asks him to leave for safety, Wegener refuses in gild to complete his mission, which he cites was Tagomi's plan. Tagomi explains that he no longer wants anyone else's claret on his hands. This response from Tagomi demonstrates a major shift in his mindset where he no longer plays chess with politics. He realizes that his actions jeopardized the Prince's life, so he must be more aware of his people in danger nether his ain orders.
At piece of work, Ed tells Frank that Juliana knows nigh the gun. Annoyingly, Ed continues to harass Frank until his boss interrupts the conversation to bank check Frank's mental country.
Switching to Kido, he and his sergeant witness the Crown Prince's head officer commit seppuku. This practise occurred when an individual brought shame upon his family, so that person would commit suicide to maintain his honor. Kido reminds his sergeant that he will have over Kido'southward position after Kido commits seppuku if the shooter is not apprehended.
Juliana arrives at her dojo, but her teacher refuses to allow her practice due to her avoiding condition with the land. Side by side, she enters an interrogation with Kido and his sergeant. Juliana references several landmarks to cover her true location during the mission. However, Kido reminds Juliana of the consequences of her actions to end the interrogation.
After she leaves the interrogation, Juliana researches Randall Becker, whom the sergeant asked about in the questioning. Juliana travels to his accost and finds the lady Frank spoke to most the films at the bar. She asks Juliana well-nigh the delivery of the film. Afterward she gives confirmation about the film's safety, Juliana inquires about the films and the man in the high castle'southward apply for the films. Dodging Juliana's questions, the resistance fighter states that Juliana is struggling to live with Trudy'south death. She says that Juliana must motility on with her life. (Similar to Joe's message before this flavor.)
In her next scene, this resistance fighter tells Juliana that someone leaked the information well-nigh the films and Trudy. Therefore, she concludes that the leak is from within the Japanese Potency Edifice, which happens to have an open position. Juliana accepts the chore to try to find the contact as an employee.
Back to the politics of the show, Tagomi tries to persuade Kido to hand over Wegener'southward passport. Kido refuses to hand over the passport, so Tagomi acquires a diplomatic ticket for Wegener. On his way out of the hotel, Wegener attempts to deliver the microfilm to the Science Minister despite the threat of the German officer next to the government minister. He passes the microfilm and quickly avoids a conversation with the familiar looking German officer.
Finally, Juliana arrives at the Japanese Authority Building for the open up position. During an awkward interview, Juliana is asked to showcase her trunk. When the man insinuates that she provide oral sex for the job, she storms out of the room. Upon her difference, she crashes into Tagomi, who stares at Juliana fleeing from the office, equally the episode ends.
Devious Observations:
- Smith's spoken language well-nigh the Nazi machine that has a multitude of cogs was really well executed. He showcases the importance of each member in the auto and how i small mistake can throw the whole machinery into chaos. The theme of each member serving a purpose for the fatherland echoes loudly again in this voice communication.
- The brutality of Juliana's investigation kept a tense atmosphere for a rather light episode as far as action is concerned. That slap from the sergeant besides seemed to get the ball rolling every bit far as Juliana'due south desire to contribute to the resistance cause.
- Frank's presence at the funeral provided an uneasy atmosphere as his afterwards outburst shows that he truly cares near the loss. Thus, his brother-in-police force should lay off Frank since he really endured a lot of torture and pleaded for the safety of his sister and her kids.
- Lastly, my favorite shot of this episode occurred at approximately the 7:xl mark for Juliana'due south bus evacuation. This scene captures the disarray in San Francisco as the officers took extreme measures to find the shooter.
